Introduction to Backyard Beekeeping

Before getting the buzz, find out more about the role of a beekeeper.

The Be Like Bees Introduction to Backyard Beekeeping is suited to those interested in keeping between one and three bee hives in their backyard.

My focus is on giving you information that helps you appreciate bees as much as possible. I call it a responsive method due to the focus you choose; whether to enjoy the natural processes of bees or harvest more honey. I also work with you one to one so all your questions can be answered.

Other beekeeping introduction courses are built on the experience and knowledge of those who keep a large number of hives. They often teach practices that are most suited to commercial and/or honey focused hive keeping.

In my session we can explore topics important to you, such as:
  • How to keep costs down.
  • Agriculture Victoria requirements.
  • Responsibilities and commitments: time, space and costs.
  • Hives: types of hives and their pros and cons, parts of the hive.
  • Planning and preparation: placement of a hive.
  • Tools and equipment.
  • Inside the hive: identifying brood, larvae, eggs, pollen, honey and nectar.
  • Basic pests and diseases.
  • Options for harvesting honey.

1.5 - 2 hours @ your place = $80
* Additional costs may apply outside the Wyndham City area.
Contact me if you would like to arrange an online session.
